Gravel Driveways
We build gravel driveways and driveway pads on a graded base. We also regrade rutted, washed-out driveways and put the crown back so rain runs off.

You own a wooded lot, and brush covers the spot where the house will go. Site preparation clears that ground before the builder starts. We mulch the brush and small trees off the building spot and the drive with a compact track loader. The mature trees you and your builder want to keep stay standing.
Paulin Land Solutions does site prep for people about to build on their own land. We work across Waukesha County and the area about 40 miles around North Prairie. Once the brush is down, the surveyor and your builder can see the ground. For acreage with no build planned, see our land clearing services in Waukesha.
Tell us about the land you want cleared or graded and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Site prep starts with where the house and the drive will sit. Your plans or your builder show us the building spot, and we clear that ground. The mulching head on our track loader grinds brush and small trees where they stand. It is the same forestry mulching we do on wooded acreage, aimed at the spot you will build on.
The mulch stays on the ground as a layer, and the roots stay in the soil. Where the basement or the footings go, your builder's excavation contractor digs out those roots with the soil.
Then we grade a rough building pad or a shed pad with the track loader and backfill the low spots. Leveling the yard past the pad falls under land grading and backfill.
Wooded lots around Waukesha County and the Kettle Moraine often hold oaks you may want to keep. The Wisconsin DNR says oak wilt is widespread in southern Wisconsin. Its guide for building on a wooded lot says the disease often takes hold in new developments after construction damage.
Sap-feeding beetles carry oak wilt spores to fresh wounds. The DNR's advice is to avoid cutting or wounding oaks from April through July. If an oak gets wounded in those months, paint the wound with tree paint right away. With oaks near the building spot, plan the lot clearing for before April or after July.
The same guide suggests sturdy temporary fencing around kept trees, at least 10 feet from the trunks. Placed at the drip line, under the outer edge of the branches, it also guards the roots from packed soil. It adds that trees within 15 feet of the house should generally come out. A tree service handles the big ones.
When we finish, the building spot and the drive are open and the rough pad is graded. The surveyor can stake the house, and your builder can bring in the trades. The drive route can become a gravel driveway when you are ready for one.
Wisconsin's Uniform Dwelling Code covers erosion control on a new home site. Sediment controls, like silt fence, go in before ground-disturbing work begins. Ask your builder about them before the pad is graded. On a site that disturbs an acre or more, the DNR's rules apply instead.
The deeper digging belongs to other trades. The basement goes to an excavation contractor, and a lot with no sewer needs a septic installer. Wisconsin law counts grading and digging as excavation. Diggers Hotline, at 811, needs at least three working days' notice so buried lines get marked first.

We look at the land before we price it. The thickness of the brush and the lay of the ground shape the plan.
We put the quote in writing and spell out what it covers. You decide once you have it in hand.
We set a start date with you and bring in the compact track loader. The mulching head grinds the brush and small trees where they stand.
Where the job calls for it, we grade the ground once the brush is down. The land is open and ready for its next use.

We mulch brush and saplings under power lines and along utility easements on private land. The lines and the trees near the wires stay with the utility.

The track loader that mulches the brush also grades the ground. One company handles the clearing and the rough pad.
