Brush Hogging in Waukesha, WI

Brush Hogging · Waukesha, WI

Overgrown fields cut back before they turn to brush

Brush hogging, which some people call bush hogging, cuts an overgrown field back to open ground. We run a brush hog, a rotary brush cutter, on our compact track loader. It mows down tall weeds and light brush in fields and pastures around Waukesha. The fence rows and lot edges beside them open back up too.

A field that goes without a cut fills in with goldenrod, then saplings. Paulin Land Solutions brush hogs that ground to keep it open between bigger clearings. When the brush gets too thick or the saplings too big, the job moves to forestry mulching. Both are part of our land clearing work in Waukesha County and across Southeast Wisconsin.

What We Handle

  • Tall weeds and goldenrod mowed down across open ground

  • Fence rows cut back so you can reach the fence line
  • Horse pastures and hobby farm fields clipped and kept open
  • Lot edges and far corners opened up again
  • Cut grass and brush left on the ground to break down
  • Thick brush and bigger saplings moved to the mulching head

Field and Pasture Brush Mowing in Waukesha County

Most farms in Waukesha County are small. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 439 farms in the county, and 278 were under 50 acres. The same count found 996 horses and ponies.

We brush hog hobby farm fields, horse pastures, idle acreage and the far corners of big lots. Grown-over Lake Country lots and fence rows get cut back too. A regular cut keeps that ground a field instead of a thicket.

When Does Brush Cutting Become a Mulching Job?

A brush hog cuts tall grass and weeds, plus saplings up to a few inches thick. It works best on open ground without heavy brush.

Thick brush and bigger saplings move to the mulching head on the same track loader. It grinds them into mulch where they stand. If your field has both kinds of ground, the written quote says which tool works where.

Brush under mature trees is a different job again. That is brush clearing under the trees, and the big trees stay standing. A fence row choked with buckthorn needs buckthorn removal with the mulching head first. After that, brush hogging can keep the regrowth cut back.

Brush Hogging Before Wisconsin Weeds Go to Seed

Timing matters with field mowing. The UW Extension advises mowing pasture weeds after they bolt, or send up a tall stalk, but before they seed. For some weeds that window lasts less than two weeks. Once the seed is ripe, mowing spreads it.

Wisconsin's noxious weed law, state statute 66.0407, points the same way. Canada thistle is on its list, and whoever owns or controls the land must destroy it. Under the law, cutting counts when it keeps the plants from reaching the bloom stage. Towns and counties can add other weeds to the list.

Wild parsnip is another reason to watch the calendar. The Wisconsin DNR lists old fields and pastures among the places it invades. It says a brush cutter can handle large patches before the seeds set. The sap can blister skin in sunlight, so tell us where it grows before we cut.

FAQ

Brush Hogging Questions, Answered

Common questions about brush hogging around Waukesha and the Kettle Moraine. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (262) 527-7619

Is brush hogging the same as mowing a lawn?
A brush hog is a rotary brush cutter for tall weeds and saplings in fields and pastures. It cuts growth a lawn mower cannot get through. A yard that wants a short, even cut needs a lawn mowing service instead.
What happens to the grass and brush after you cut it?
It stays on the field. The brush hog cuts the growth into pieces that lie on the ground and break down there. Thick brush and bigger saplings go through the mulching head, and that mulch stays on the ground too.
How much does brush hogging cost?
The price comes from the size of the field and what grows on it. Thick, tall growth with saplings in it takes longer than short grass and weeds. Slopes and soft ground add time, and so do hidden rocks or wire. We look at the job and put the quote in writing, so call or text (262) 527-7619.
How often does a field need brush hogging?
That depends on what grows there and how you use the land. A pasture may need clipping when the grass goes to seed, and weeds need a cut before they seed. An idle field needs a cut often enough that the saplings never outgrow the brush hog. We can set the timing with you when we look at the job.
How short should a pasture be cut?
The UW Extension says to clip a pasture no lower than 4 inches, and 6 to 8 inches is better. Clipping too low can slow the regrowth. In a drought, it advises skipping the clip or raising the height to save the green leaves. Tell us how you use the pasture before we cut.
What should I do before you brush hog my field?
Tell us about anything hidden in the tall grass. Old fence wire, rocks, stumps and well caps can sit out of sight. Mark them with a flag or a stake before we start. If you want a path cut into the woods too, that is trail clearing, and we can quote both.
