Much of Elkhorn sits on flat ground that is slow to dry out. NRCS soil maps put more than half of the city on poorly drained or somewhat poorly drained silt loam. Low corners that stay too wet to mow go to brush and saplings. Fence rows and field edges fill in with brush and buckthorn the same way.
Paulin Land Solutions does land clearing across Southeast Wisconsin, and Elkhorn is part of our service area. That area runs about 40 miles around North Prairie. Our main service is forestry mulching: a mulching head on a track loader grinds brush into mulch in place. Call or text (262) 527-7619, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

The NRCS soil survey maps nearly all of Elkhorn on slopes of 6 percent or less. Pella silt loam, the most common soil in the city, covers about a third of it. The survey lists Pella as wet to the surface from November into May. Water often ponds on it in those months.
Wet silt loam ruts under a track loader, so timing matters on these lots. We look at the ground first and plan the job around the wet months. The mulch stays on the ground as a layer over the soil.
The same soils are hard on driveways. The NRCS rates about three quarters of the city's land very limited for local roads. Low strength and frost action are the main reasons. A gravel driveway on this ground holds up better with a graded base and a crown that sheds water.
Elkhorn had 10,247 residents at the 2020 Census, and it is the Walworth County seat. About four in ten of its homes were built between 1990 and 2009, by Census estimates. About one in seven dates to 1939 or earlier. Either kind of yard can hold a back corner gone to brush.
Jackson Creek runs through the city, and Sugar Creek runs along its edge. FEMA flood maps show flood zones along both creeks. Near the water, state wetland rules may apply, so check them before any brush comes down.
Past the city limits, the land opens into farm fields, and Delavan Lake lies a few miles southwest. The White River State Trail heads east from town on an old rail line. On open land, brush hogging keeps a pasture or a fence row from going to brush between clearings. Where buckthorn has filled the woods, buckthorn removal with the mulching head knocks the thicket down.
Inside the city limits, the City of Elkhorn's building inspection issues permits, including an erosion control permit. Ask the city whether your clearing or grading job needs one before the work starts. The city's rules are separate from the county's, so a lot in town starts with the city.
Most of the towns around Elkhorn follow Walworth County rules. The county's Land Use and Resource Management department works from the Old Court House on the square downtown. Its permit sheet says clearing or grading over 4,000 square feet in the towns needs an erosion control permit. Within 1,000 feet of a lake or 300 feet of a stream, clearing of any size needs one.
On some land just outside the city, Elkhorn's extraterritorial zoning applies instead of county zoning. Before any digging or grading, Wisconsin law says to contact Diggers Hotline at 811 at least three working days ahead. We point you to the right office, and the work follows its answer.
