Utility Line Clearing in Waukesha, WI

Utility Line Clearing · Waukesha, WI

Brush mulched under the lines on your land

Brush and saplings fill in under a power line that crosses your land. Utility line clearing opens that strip back up. We mulch the brush and small trees under and along lines and easements on private land. The mulching head on our compact track loader grinds them into mulch right on the strip.

Paulin Land Solutions does utility line clearing for landowners across Waukesha County and Southeast Wisconsin. It is the same forestry mulching we do on overgrown lots, aimed at the strip under the line. North Prairie sits at the center of our service area, which reaches about 40 miles around. For a whole wooded lot, see our land clearing services around Waukesha.

Right-of-Way Clearing Under Power Lines and Easements

Right-of-way clearing starts with where the line runs. You or the utility show us the strip, and we keep the work inside it. Brush, saplings, vines and buckthorn get mulched down under the line and along its edges.

The strip may cross a back field or a woodlot, or follow the line to a well or a shed. A fence row along an easement can be mulched down too. We also cut back the edges of a lane so a utility truck can reach the line. A lane for your own ATV falls under trail clearing.

A clear strip lets you and the utility see the line and reach it. Mulching the strip also takes out saplings before they grow up toward the wires.

What Stays With the Utility on a Power Line Easement?

The utility owns its lines and poles, and its own crews or contractors work on them. Trees and limbs near the wires are the utility's work too. Call the utility about any limb that touches or leans toward a line.

Federal OSHA rules keep a machine's raised parts at least 10 feet from live overhead lines up to 50,000 volts. Higher-voltage lines need more room. Our part is the brush and saplings on the ground under and beside the line.

Diggers Hotline and Buried Lines on Waukesha County Land

Wisconsin law says anyone who digs contacts Diggers Hotline at least three working days before the work starts. That includes a homeowner in their own yard. Weekends and state legal holidays do not count. After a call to 811 or a request online, the line owners mark their buried lines with paint or flags.

Grading and scraping count as excavation under the law, so the marks come first on any job that moves soil. The one-call center says hand tools count too, at any depth. Until a buried line is exposed, state rules keep a machine's cutting edge at least 18 inches from its marks.

Private lines do not get marked through Diggers Hotline. Its examples include a line after the meter and an electric line to a barn or a garage. Those lines are the landowner's responsibility, and a locating company can be hired to mark them.

FAQ

Utility Line Clearing Questions, Answered

Common questions about utility line clearing around Waukesha and the Kettle Moraine. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (262) 527-7619

Should I ask the utility before clearing the easement on my land?
Yes. An easement is a contract that lets the utility build and maintain its line on your land. You keep general ownership, but the easement can limit which woody plants grow in the strip, and how tall. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin points landowners to the utility first with right-of-way questions.
Do you work for the power company?
No. We work for landowners and homeowners on their own land. Work on the wires and the trees around them stays with the utility's own crews or contractors.
How much does utility line clearing cost?
The length and width of the strip set most of the price. Thick brush and bigger stems take more time, and so does soft or hard-to-reach ground. We look at the job and put the quote in writing, so call or text (262) 527-7619.
What happens to the brush and saplings?
The mulching head grinds them where they stand. The mulch stays on the strip as a layer over the soil and breaks down over time. Big trees that need to come down are work for a tree service, or for the utility near the wires.
How do I keep the strip from growing back?
Buckthorn sprouts back from cut stumps and from seed in the soil, so a cleared strip needs follow-up. Brush hogging the strip keeps young sprouts short between clearings. For a thick stand of buckthorn beside the line, see our buckthorn removal.
When is the best time to clear under a power line?
It depends on the ground under the line. Frozen winter ground can carry the track loader across a wet strip with less rutting. If the strip crosses a wetland or a shoreline, state and county rules apply. The Wisconsin DNR and the county land use office answer those questions, and we point you there.
