Trail Clearing in Waukesha, WI

Trail Clearing · Waukesha, WI

Trails and hunting paths opened through the brush

Trail clearing turns woods you can't get through into trails you can walk or ride. We cut hunting trails and ATV lanes with a mulching head on a compact track loader. We also reclaim old trails that have grown shut. The mulch stays on the trail as a layer over the soil.

Paulin Land Solutions serves Waukesha County and Southeast Wisconsin, about 40 miles around North Prairie. Trail clearing is one part of our land clearing around Waukesha. It runs on the same machine as our forestry mulching. Call or text (262) 527-7619 to talk about your trails.

Hunting Trails and Paths Cut With a Mulching Head

A hunting trail gives you a clear walk to your stand before first light. The mulching head grinds brush and saplings down where they stand, and the trail opens up behind the machine.

The same work opens a walking path through the woods. It also opens an access lane to a back field or down to a pond. Tell us what will travel the trail, on foot or on an ATV, and we cut it to fit.

Old trails grow shut when brush and buckthorn move in. The mulching head reopens them and widens an overgrown lane back out. Open stretches of tall grass and light brush get the brush hog, the tool we use for brush hogging fields.

Trail Building in the Kettle Moraine Hills

Trail building around the Kettle Moraine means working with hills and wet low ground. The Wisconsin DNR describes the Kettle Moraine State Forest's Southern Unit as forested glacial hills and kettle lakes. Inside the village of North Prairie, the NRCS soil survey maps some ground at 20 to 30 percent slopes.

Water follows a trail downhill. The DNR's forestry field manual warns that roads and skid trails can funnel runoff and cut gullies. It advises keeping skid trails, the paths logging machines use to move logs, under 15 percent grade where possible. We plan the route with you to follow the lay of the land.

Some of the low ground between the hills is wetland. The same manual says skid trails in a wetland need firm or frozen ground. It adds that any wetland work must follow DNR and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rules. The DNR's online permit viewer lets you screen your land for wetlands first.

When Is the Best Time to Cut a Hunting Trail?

Start with the hunting calendar. The DNR's season dates put the archery deer opener in September and the gun deer season in late November. Plan the trail clearing so the work is done well before you hunt.

In oak woods, the trees keep a second calendar. The DNR says oak wilt is widespread in southern Wisconsin. Its greatest risk of spread runs from April through July. Sap-feeding beetles then carry the spores to fresh wounds and recently cut oak stumps.

That makes late summer a good window in oak woods, after July and before the archery opener. Late winter works too, after deer season closes. Frozen ground carries the loader over soft spots with less rutting. Our loader runs on tracks, which the DNR manual says can help limit soil compaction.

FAQ

Trail Clearing Questions, Answered

Common questions about trail clearing around Waukesha and the Kettle Moraine. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (262) 527-7619

How wide can you cut a trail?
We cut it to the width you ask for. A walking path can stay narrow, and an ATV or UTV lane needs more room. An access lane for a pickup or a tractor takes a wider cut still. If that lane needs a graded base and gravel, see our gravel driveways and farm lanes.
Can you open a path down to the lake?
Yes, where the shoreland rules allow it. Under Wisconsin's rule NR 115, county ordinances keep a buffer of plants along the shore. It runs at least 35 feet inland from the ordinary high-water mark. A county can allow an access and viewing corridor through it, and your zoning office says what fits your lot.
How much does trail clearing cost?
The length and width of the trail set most of the price. Thick brush, bigger saplings, steep hills and wet spots add time on the machine. We look at the job and put the quote in writing. Call or text (262) 527-7619 to set that up.
How do I keep a new trail from growing back in?
Grass and brush creep back in from the edges, and buckthorn sprouts again from cut stumps. A pass with the brush hog now and then keeps the trail open. Where buckthorn is thick along the trail, buckthorn removal covers the follow-up cuts.
Can you put in a bridge or a culvert where a trail crosses a creek?
No. Bridges and culverts are work for another contractor. The Wisconsin DNR says a new bridge over a navigable waterway needs a permit. Its crossing page says a new culvert or a ford needs one too.
Do you plant food plots or put up tree stands?
No. We cut the trails and the access lanes that lead to them. Planting a food plot and hanging a stand stay with you or another provider.
