A graded base and a crown that sheds water

Paulin Land Solutions offers gravel driveway installation and driveway grading around Waukesha, WI. We build new gravel driveways and driveway pads on a graded base. On an older driveway, we regrade the ruts and washouts and put the crown back. Our compact track loader does the grading, and a supplier delivers the gravel.

North Prairie sits at the center of our service area, which reaches about 40 miles around. Where a new driveway runs through brush, forestry mulching opens the route first. We also do land clearing in Waukesha, so the lot and the driveway can be one job. Call or text (262) 527-7619 to talk about your driveway.

Gravel Driveway Installation on a Graded Base

Gravel driveway installation starts with the route. Where it runs through brush and saplings, the mulching head grinds them down. Then we grade the base, the ground the gravel sits on, smooth and sloped. Wisconsin's one-call law counts grading as excavation, so buried utility lines get marked through Diggers Hotline (811) first.

Once the gravel arrives, we spread it and grade it. The surface gets a crown, a center a little higher than the edges. The Federal Highway Administration's gravel roads guide recommends about half an inch of crown per foot, near 4 percent. Rain and snowmelt then run off to the sides.

The same grading builds a driveway pad to park on or a turnaround for trucks. A level pad for a shed or a pole building falls under land grading instead. On a new home lot, we clear the driveway route as part of site preparation for a build.

Why Does a Gravel Driveway Rut and Wash Out?

Water does most of the damage. On a driveway that has lost its crown, rain sits in the low spots and softens the gravel. The federal guide says potholes and ruts form where water cannot drain off.

Traffic does the rest. Tires push gravel out of the wheel paths, and it piles up along the edges and down the middle. The ridges at the edges then trap water on the driveway. In long dry spells, the surface loosens and washboard ripples form.

Southeast Wisconsin winters freeze the ground. When it thaws in spring, the base under the gravel turns soft and muddy. The federal guide notes that gravel under heavy trucks starts to fail in wet weather and in the spring thaw.

Driveway Grading and Re-Crowning Around Waukesha County

Driveway grading cuts the surface down to the bottom of the potholes and ruts. We pull the gravel back in from the edges and shape the crown again. The federal guide lays out the same steps for grading a gravel road.

Where the gravel has worn thin, a supplier delivers fresh stone, and we spread it over the regraded surface. A spot that stays soft after grading often sits on wet, weak soil. The federal guide says a weak, wet base like that needs more than a regrade.

Nearly every gravel surface has some loose stone on top, the federal guide notes. It also says washboard ripples cannot be stopped for good, even with the best upkeep. A regrade now and then puts the shape back before the ruts run deep.

FAQ

Gravel Driveways Questions, Answered

Common questions about gravel driveways around Waukesha and the Kettle Moraine. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (262) 527-7619

How much does a gravel driveway cost?
The length and width of the driveway set most of the price. Brush on the route and soft ground add work. The amount of gravel the driveway takes matters too. We look at the job and put the quote in writing, so call or text (262) 527-7619.
What kind of gravel goes on a driveway?
Suppliers in this area sell traffic bond, a crushed limestone with stone dust mixed in. The dust helps hold the stones together in a firm surface. It comes in sizes such as three-quarter inch for the base and a finer grade for the top. Round stone shifts under tires more easily, the federal gravel roads guide notes.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway?
Often, yes. Wisconsin law requires a permit from the office that maintains the road for any work in the road right-of-way. That can be the town, the village or city, the county or the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. That office answers the permit question, and we point you there.
Can I put in a new gravel driveway inside the City of Waukesha?
No. The City of Waukesha requires concrete, asphalt or brick on any driveway built after 2002. It does not allow a new gravel driveway inside the city limits, and an old one cannot be expanded. A gravel driveway that was there before 2002 can stay. Fresh gravel can go on it to keep it up, on the same area only, and we can regrade and re-gravel a drive like that. New gravel driveways and pads are for the towns, villages and rural lots around Waukesha, where most of this work is.
What if I want an asphalt or concrete driveway instead?
We build gravel driveways. An asphalt driveway goes to a paving contractor, and a concrete driveway goes to a concrete contractor. Culvert pipe at the road ditch is work for another contractor as well.
When is the best time to regrade a gravel driveway?
The federal gravel roads guide calls spring the best time to reshape gravel, because moisture is often present then. Dry gravel only smooths out for a short time. During the spring thaw, towns and counties can post weight limits on their roads. A loaded gravel truck may have to wait until those limits come off.
Can you cut a new driveway through the woods?
Yes, through brush and small trees. The mulching head on our track loader grinds them down along the route, and then we grade the base. Large trees need a tree service, so they come down before we start.
