Brush Clearing in Waukesha, WI

Brush Clearing · Waukesha, WI

Woods you can see into and walk through again

Brush clearing opens up woods that have grown shut. Honeysuckle, buckthorn, prickly ash and briars crowd the ground under the trees until you cannot walk through. We mulch that brush down with a mulching head on a compact track loader. The mature trees stay standing, and you can see into your woods again.

Paulin Land Solutions offers brush clearing services for wooded lots and acreage about 40 miles around North Prairie. It is one piece of the land clearing we do around Waukesha and across Southeast Wisconsin. When small trees need to go along with the brush, forestry mulching is the better fit.

What Is Underbrushing?

Underbrushing is brush clearing under a stand of mature trees. It suits woods you want to keep as woods. The mulching head grinds honeysuckle, buckthorn, prickly ash and box elder saplings down to the ground. Vines and briars go with them, and the mature trees stay standing.

Once the undergrowth is down, you can walk through your woods and see what grows in them. Light reaches the forest floor again, and the ground-up brush stays there as mulch. A single path to a deer stand or a pond falls under trail clearing.

Underbrush Clearing in Waukesha County Woods

The Wisconsin DNR lists the non-native bush honeysuckles as restricted invasive plants in Waukesha County. They leaf out one to two weeks before native trees and shrubs and hold their leaves later in fall. That long season shades out the plants beneath them. Birds eat the berries and carry the seeds to new ground.

The DNR names lakeshores and open woods among the places Bell's honeysuckle invades. That takes in a lot of ground in Lake Country and the Kettle Moraine.

The University of Wisconsin extension service calls prickly ash thickets nearly impossible for people and livestock to get through. Box elder seeds travel long distances on the wind. The mulching head takes both down along with the honeysuckle and buckthorn.

Brush Removal Beyond the Woods

Brush and vines grow up through old fence lines until you can barely see the fence. Brush removal along the line opens it back up and shows where it runs. In an open field, a fence row with grass and light brush is often a job for brush hogging.

An overgrown lot hides the lay of the land. Brush removal opens it up so you can see the ground and the trees worth keeping. Around a shed or a barn, we mulch the brush back from the walls.

Brush near a lake or a stream can fall under shoreland zoning, which limits cutting close to the water. In the towns of Waukesha County, the county's Parks and Land Use department handles it. In a city or a village, ask its zoning office. Wetland edges fall under state rules, and the Wisconsin DNR answers what is allowed there.

FAQ

Brush Clearing Questions, Answered

Common questions about brush clearing around Waukesha and the Kettle Moraine. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (262) 527-7619

How much does brush clearing cost?
The price depends on how thick the brush is and how much ground it covers. Bigger stems, steep slopes, wet ground and the trees we work around all add to the work. We look at the brush first and put the quote in writing. Call or text (262) 527-7619 to set that up.
Will you cut down any of my trees?
We leave the mature trees standing and mulch the brush and saplings under them. Large trees that have to come down are work for a tree service. Grinding their stumps is a separate trade.
What happens to the brush after you clear it?
The mulching head grinds the brush into mulch right where it grew. The mulch stays on the ground as a layer over the soil and breaks down over time. You are left with open woods instead of brush piles.
When is the best time of year for brush clearing?
Each season has a trade-off. The extension service says brush cut while dormant sprouts back the most, and brush cut after full leaf-out the least. In oak woods, the Wisconsin DNR says oak wilt spreads most from April through July. A late-summer cut misses that window and leaves sprouts little time to grow before winter.
Will the brush grow back?
Some of it will. The extension service says box elder and maples usually sprout again from a cut stump. Buckthorn sprouts back too, and the DNR advises following up on honeysuckle for several years. Plan on a follow-up pass over the new sprouts, the same as with buckthorn removal.
How do I get ready for brush clearing?
Flag the trees you want kept so they stand out from the brush. Know where your property lines run; a land surveyor can mark them. Tell us about old fence wire or metal hidden in the brush before we start.
