Forestry Mulching
A mulching head on our compact track loader grinds brush and small trees into mulch where they stand. The mulch stays on your land as ground cover, and the big trees you pick stay standing.

Pewaukee is a city and a village that share one name. The city, with about 16,000 people, surrounds the village at the east end of Pewaukee Lake. Between the subdivisions, the city still holds plenty of wetland and woods. Left alone, back lots and woodlot edges fill with buckthorn and brush until you cannot see through them.
Paulin Land Solutions handles land clearing across Waukesha County, and Pewaukee is part of our service area. Our compact track loader runs a mulching head for forestry mulching and buckthorn removal. The brush and small trees become a mulch layer that stays on the ground. The village voted to split from the old Town of Pewaukee in 1876. The rest of the town became the city of Pewaukee in 1999, after ten failed tries. Today the city covers about 19.5 square miles of land, and the village about 4.1.
Pewaukee Lake covers 2,437 acres, by the Wisconsin DNR's count. The village runs the outlet dam where the Pewaukee River leaves the lake. FEMA's flood maps show floodplain and a floodway along the river through the village.
The village sits entirely in ZIP 53072. The city shares 53072 and also reaches into 53186 and 53188. Capitol Drive and WI 16 run through both, and I 94 crosses the city. If you are not sure which one your parcel sits in, the county's property website shows it.
The city has promoted itself as the City in the Country. In the regional planning commission's 2020 land use count, about half its area was still in non-urban uses. Wetland made up about 16 percent of the city, and woodland covered about 640 acres.
Farmland in the city fell from about 2,130 acres in 2010 to about 1,140 in 2020. A field that stops getting cut goes to brush and saplings. The Wisconsin DNR lists old fields and woods along rivers among the places common buckthorn invades.
The DNR also says common buckthorn does best on well-drained soil, the kind that covers much of Pewaukee. Brush hogging keeps an idle field or a lot edge cut before saplings take hold. Once the stems get thick, the mulching head takes over.
The NRCS soil survey maps more Hochheim loam in Pewaukee than any other soil. The NRCS describes it as well drained, with dense glacial till close to the surface. It sits on drumlins and moraines, and much of it here is mapped on slopes of 2 to 12 percent.
Flat and low ground holds wetter soils. Lamartine and Brookston silt loams sit in the flats, and muck fills the wettest low spots. The NRCS rates about half of Pewaukee's land very limited for local roads, mostly for frost action and low strength.
That matters for a gravel drive or a parking pad. On this ground, gravel driveways hold up better on a graded base that sheds water. A supplier delivers the gravel, and we spread it and grade it to a crown. The city lists driveways under its zoning permit, so ask there which surfaces your lot allows.
Census permit data show 280 new single-family homes authorized in the city from 2021 through 2025. The village authorized 79 more. The city's neighborhood plans count about 1,044 more acres to be developed for homes. City zoning sets minimum lot sizes from 12,500 square feet up to five acres.
Before a house goes up, brush and small trees have to come off the building site and the drive. With site preparation, we mulch that growth and keep the mature trees the owner and the builder want. We can also grade a rough pad or backfill around a foundation another contractor digs.
The city has a landscape and grading permit, plus an erosion control permit for new homes. Its erosion control form says disturbing an acre or more needs a DNR notice of intent and engineering approval. Driveway work in the city right-of-way needs a culvert permit. Building Services at City Hall answers which permits a job needs, and we plan the work around that answer.
