Forestry Mulching in Waukesha, WI

Forestry Mulching · Waukesha, WI

Brush and saplings turned to mulch right where they grow

Forestry mulching clears brush and small trees and leaves the ground covered in mulch. We run a compact track loader with a disc mulcher and a second mulching head. The head grinds brush, saplings, vines and buckthorn where they stand. Everything we cut stays on your land as a layer of mulch.

We serve Waukesha and the towns about 40 miles around North Prairie in Southeast Wisconsin. Forestry mulching fits overgrown acreage and wooded home sites. It is often the first step in land clearing around Waukesha. Call or text (262) 527-7619, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

How Our Forestry Mulching Services Work

The mulching head has spinning teeth that cut standing brush and small trees. It grinds the stems into chips in the same pass. The chips fall where the brush stood and form a layer of mulch. The roots stay in the soil, and the topsoil stays where it is.

The head handles thick brush, vines, saplings and small trees, buckthorn thickets included. Mature trees you want kept stay standing, and we mulch the brush around them. Clearing under the trees this way is called underbrushing. Felling large trees is work for a tree service, and stump grinding is a separate trade.

The mulch covers bare soil, so rain is less likely to wash that soil down a slope. On the hills of the Kettle Moraine, the roots left in the ground help hold the slopes too. Over time the mulch breaks down into the soil. Grass and other plants often grow back through it once light reaches the ground.

Forestry Mulching for Kettle Moraine Woodlots and Lake Country Lots

The Kettle Moraine is glacial country, where wooded hills rise between kettle lakes and wet low spots. Across Southeast Wisconsin, buckthorn fills the understory of oak and maple woods and moves into old fields. Old pasture also goes to box elder and prickly ash when nobody cuts it. Mulching opens that ground back up so you can see into the woods and walk through them again.

On a Lake Country lot, mulching can open a view or a path down to the lake. Wisconsin's shoreland rules protect the plants in a strip at least 35 feet back from the water. Counties can allow a view corridor or the removal of invasive plants there, with conditions. Your county zoning office, or your city or village, says what your lot allows.

When Does Forestry Mulching Beat Clearing and Hauling?

Clearing and hauling means the brush is cut and piled, then trucked off or burned. A mulcher does the cutting and the cleanup together. The topsoil stays in place, and the mulch covers it while plants come back.

Mulching fits land you plan to use as it is, with the topsoil and the big trees kept. Woodlots, old pasture, lake lots and hunting land are good examples. On a hobby farm or a horse property, it takes back pasture edges and fence rows.

Building a house is a different job. Where a basement or footings go, an excavation contractor digs the roots out with the soil. Mulching the lot first still helps, because the builder and the surveyor can see the ground. Our site preparation for a new home covers the building envelope and the drive.

FAQ

Forestry Mulching Questions, Answered

Common questions about forestry mulching around Waukesha and the Kettle Moraine. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (262) 527-7619

What is forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching cuts brush and small trees and grinds them into mulch in one step. A mulching head on a compact track loader does the work. The mulch stays on the ground, and the roots stay in the soil.
How much does forestry mulching cost?
The price depends on how thick the growth is and how big the stems are. Acreage and slope move it too, and so do access and wet ground. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts. Call or text (262) 527-7619.
Does forestry mulching remove stumps and roots?
No. The head cuts small stems low to the ground, and the roots stay in the soil. Old stumps from big trees stay where they are. Stump grinding is a separate trade, and so is digging roots out for a foundation.
Will the brush grow back after mulching?
Some of it will. Many shrubs sprout again from the roots left in the ground. Brush hogging between clearings keeps the sprouts short. Buckthorn is the stubborn one, and our buckthorn removal page covers the follow-up it needs.
When is the best time of year for forestry mulching in Wisconsin?
Late fall and winter work well in Southeast Wisconsin. With the leaves down, it is easy to see the ground and the trees you want kept. Frozen ground also carries a track loader over spots that are too soft in spring. Work near big oaks fits best outside April through July, when the Wisconsin DNR says oak wilt spreads most easily.
What if part of my land is wet or full of cattails?
Cattails and standing water can mean a wetland, and the state's wetland rules apply there. The Wisconsin DNR says a wetland permit may be required for a project on land with wetlands. Its wetland identification service can tell you whether a wetland is there and roughly where it ends. Tell us about the wet spots when you call or text.
