Mukwonago land runs from village yards on the Phantom Lakes to town parcels of 3 to 5 acres. Under the oaks on the ridges and along the Mukwonago River, buckthorn and honeysuckle often crowd the ground. The village picks up brush only in bundles up to 4 feet long and 50 pounds. A back acre of thicket is a much bigger job than that.
Paulin Land Solutions clears land with a compact track loader that runs mulching heads and a brush hog. Mukwonago, the village and the town, is part of our service area for land clearing around Waukesha and Southeast Wisconsin. We bring forestry mulching to woodlots and brushy acreage here, and the mulch stays on the ground. Call or text (262) 527-7619, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

The Village of Mukwonago has about 3,400 housing units, and about two in three are single-family homes. The median home was built in 1990, and more than a third went up in 2000 or later. Older bungalows and Victorian houses sit near downtown, and lake homes line the Phantom Lakes. Newer subdivisions include Fairwinds and Fox River Run.
The Town of Mukwonago spreads north and west of the village, with about 7,800 people. The town's 2008 plan found most town homes on 1-acre lots laid out before 1980. From the early 1980s on, most homes came at about 3 acres each or on 3 to 5 acre parcels. In the regional planning commission's 2000 land count, woods and wetland covered about 30 percent of the town.
New homes keep coming. Census permit data counts 126 new single-family homes authorized in the village from 2021 to 2025, with 43 in 2025. On a wooded home site, site preparation clears brush and small trees off the building area and the drive. Mature trees you want to keep stay standing.
Mukwonago ground formed in glacial deposits. The NRCS soil survey maps well-drained Fox, Miami, McHenry and Warsaw soils across the village. Casco soils drain even faster and show up on many steep slopes. West of town, the county's 355-acre Mukwonago Park sits on a glacial ridge of bur oak and hickory.
The low ground is another matter. Wet soils like Houghton muck line the Fox and Mukwonago Rivers and the low spots by the Phantom Lakes. Just north of the village, the Vernon Marsh, a DNR wildlife area, covers about 4,300 acres along the Fox River. Wetland work falls under state rules, so ask the Wisconsin DNR what is allowed before any brush comes out.
The Mukwonago River runs west to east through the village and feeds both Phantom Lakes. The DNR calls it one of the cleanest streams in Southeast Wisconsin, home to rare fish and mussels. Lower Phantom Lake formed when the river was dammed at the village, and it averages about 3 feet deep. FEMA maps floodplain along both the Mukwonago River and the Fox River.
Inside the village, permits go through the online system at Village Hall. The tree removal permit covers trees 8 inches or more across, measured 4 feet above the ground. Removal caps run from 80 percent on quarter-acre lots down to 20 percent past 2.5 acres. Big grading jobs can also need a village storm water permit for erosion control.
In the Town of Mukwonago, the town planner issues zoning permits, and they come before the building permit. The town also uses its own erosion control permit and a culvert sizing permit for driveways. Town land along the rivers and around the Phantom Lakes falls under Waukesha County shoreland and floodplain rules. Waukesha County Parks and Land Use answers those questions.
Both the village and the town keep burn piles at least 50 feet from any structure. The village also caps a pile at 4 feet by 4 feet by 3 feet high. Mulching keeps the brush on site as a mulch layer instead. When a rule question comes up, the village or town office answers it, and we point you there.
On Mukwonago woodlots, we mulch buckthorn and honeysuckle under the oaks and leave the mature trees standing. Buckthorn removal knocks the thicket down and lets light back to the ground. Buckthorn sprouts back from stumps and seed, so plan on follow-up cutting or mowing. A tree service handles the big trees.
Old fields and pasture edges around the town can grow up in goldenrod and box elder. Brush hogging with a rotary brush cutter on the track loader knocks that growth back. Thicker brush and bigger saplings move to the mulching head. We also open trails and hunting paths through woods and brush.
On gravel driveways, we grade the base and spread the gravel a supplier delivers. The NRCS soil survey flags frost action as a road limit on about 90 percent of village land. A crown on the drive sends water to the sides before it soaks in. Culvert pipe work goes to another contractor.
