Buckthorn Removal in Waukesha, WI

Buckthorn Removal · Waukesha, WI

Buckthorn thickets mulched down to let the light back in

Buckthorn removal is how a choked woodlot gets its light back. We mulch common buckthorn and glossy buckthorn to the ground with a mulching head on a compact track loader. The stems and brush turn into mulch right where they stood. Paulin Land Solutions serves Waukesha County and Southeast Wisconsin, about 40 miles around North Prairie.

Mulching knocks the thicket down so you can see and walk through your woods again. It does not kill the roots, so plan on follow-up work after the first pass. Buckthorn removal is one part of our land clearing in Waukesha and the towns around it. When the brush under your trees is mostly honeysuckle and prickly ash, brush clearing and underbrushing is the better fit.

What We Handle

  • Common buckthorn and glossy buckthorn thickets mulched to the ground
  • A mulching head on a compact track loader grinds stems and brush in place
  • Honeysuckle and other brush in the thicket mulched in the same pass
  • Woodlot understories cleared around the mature trees you keep
  • Buckthorn taken down along fence rows and field edges
  • Mulch left on the soil as a ground layer that can slow new seedlings
  • Follow-up cuts on the regrowth with the mulching head or the brush hog

How buckthorn takes over Southeast Wisconsin woods

Common buckthorn fills the understory of oak and maple woods across Southeast Wisconsin. It also moves into old fields and fence rows. Glossy buckthorn does the same on wetter ground, such as marshes and sedge meadows.

Both kinds leaf out early in spring and keep their leaves late into fall. That long season lets buckthorn shade out tree seedlings and the native plants under it. Left alone, a woodlot turns into a wall of brush you cannot see through.

Birds eat the berries and carry the seeds to new ground. Seeds that drop build up in the soil, so seedlings keep coming up after a thicket is cut.

Invasive species removal with a mulching head

The track loader works its way into the thicket, and the mulching head grinds each stem down to the ground. One of our mulching heads is a disc mulcher. The same machine runs our forestry mulching on lots and acreage.

The ground-up brush stays on your land as a mulch layer. The University of Wisconsin extension service advises keeping buckthorn with berries on the site, so the fruit does not spread. Its guide also says mulch left on the soil can cut down on new seedlings.

Mature trees you want to keep stay standing. Large trees that need to come down are work for a tree service. Near a lake or a wetland, shoreland and wetland rules can apply. The county land use and zoning office and the Wisconsin DNR answer those questions.

What does buckthorn control take after mulching?

Mulching takes the thicket down to the ground. It does not kill the roots or the seeds in the soil. New shoots come up from the stumps, and seedlings sprout from the seed bank. The extension service says mowing rarely kills established buckthorn, and mulching cuts it the same way.

Plan on follow-up cutting. The extension guide covers a summer cut before seed forms and a fall cut after the plant resprouts. It says the pair weakens the next year's regrowth but does not kill the plants. On open ground, brush hogging keeps the resprouts cut short.

The extension service says mowing works better when it is paired with a herbicide sprayed on the leaves. That treatment is work for a licensed applicator from another company. The applicator can also treat fresh-cut stumps. Either treatment follows the directions on the product label.

FAQ

Buckthorn Removal Questions, Answered

Common questions about buckthorn removal around Waukesha and the Kettle Moraine. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (262) 527-7619

Will mulching kill the buckthorn?
No. Mulching grinds the thicket down, but the roots live and send up new shoots. Seeds in the soil keep sprouting too. Plan on follow-up cutting, and talk to a licensed applicator if you want the regrowth treated.
Do you spray herbicide or treat the stumps?
No. We mulch buckthorn, and herbicide work belongs to another company. The extension service says a cut-stump treatment goes on no later than one hour after cutting. A foliar treatment is sprayed on the leaves while the regrowth is actively growing and fully leafed out.
How much does buckthorn removal cost?
The price depends on how thick the buckthorn is and how big the stems are. Acreage, slope, wet ground and the trees we work around all change the time on the machine. We look at the job and put the quote in writing. Call or text (262) 527-7619 to set that up.
When is the best time for buckthorn removal?
Buckthorn stays green late into fall, longer than native plants, so it is easy to spot then. The extension service suggests mowing in winter where possible. That spares the plants you want and keeps the soil from packing down. A cut in summer, before the berries ripen, stops that year's seed crop.
Do I have to remove buckthorn from my land?
Wisconsin lists common and glossy buckthorn as restricted under its invasive species rule, NR 40. The DNR says control of a restricted species is encouraged but not required. The rule does say a restricted plant cannot be transported or introduced without a permit.
How do I know it is buckthorn?
Buckthorn is a shrub or small tree, 10 to 25 feet tall. Common buckthorn twigs often end in a stout thorn, and female plants bear black berries. Glossy buckthorn has no thorns and shiny leaves. A cut branch on either one shows yellow sapwood around orange heartwood.
